This circa 1963 black-and-white “unclassified” United States Navy Training Film shows its viewer the proper ways for assembling, inspecting, and testing the standard deep-sea diving outfit — composed of the “dress,” helmet, and breastplate — which together form a water-tight enclosure surrounding the diver. Heavy boots, hoses, and a regulated air supply complete the ensemble. Mark 01:50 begins a lengthy and thorough tutorial on proper inspection of the complete outfit, including the outfit and all valves. Each step is carefully covered, with safety being of the upmost importance. This is repeatedly stressed beginning near mark 08:25, with the safety air non-return valve, located at the rear of the diver’s helmet. The spring-loaded valve allows air to pass freely from the air hose into the helmet. “Remember this is one of the diver’s most important safety devices … Be positively sure that the non-return valve is in perfect working order,” it is said near mark 09:30. Mark 12:00 shows the proper method to dress a diver, assisted by two sailors who serve as dive tenders. They begin by sliding him into the diver dress, then assist him in stepping into his boots, placing a helmet cushion over his shoulders, fitting him with the breastplate and checking the waterproof seal, before finally affixing a heavy belt and lowering the helmet with its hoses onto his head.
